The race: Georgia governor
Party: Democrat
The lane:
Geoff Duncan is a centrist Democrat that is courting traditional Democrats and disaffected Republicans.
The basics:
Duncan served as the Republican lieutenant governor of Georgia from 2019-2023. He has since changed parties and apologized for supporting Georgia’s restrictive abortion law and stances against healthcare expansion. Duncan was one of the few Republicans to openly disagree with President Donald Trump’s
Why he’s running:
Duncan is seeking to address affordability issues, healthcare, while protecting access to elections. He is also pushing fiscal moderation and bipartisan cooperation.
What’s working:
Duncan is solidly against Trump and the MAGA agenda, which is a plus among more moderate suburban swing voters who may typically support Republicans. He believes he can pull those swing voters in a general election. Plus, Duncan leans into admitting mistakes on issues like Medicaid expansion and presents as someone who can evolve.
The challenge:
Duncan’s former political life. A majority of Democrats are unconvinced he is genuinely committed to progressive priorities. Also, he’s spent considerable time and effort courting Black voters and grassroots organizations.
What to watch:
Because Duncan is trying to build credibility with the Democrats in real time, will his message be persuasive and progressive enough to win second place in the primary and secure his spot in the runoff?
