The office:
Lieutenant governor
Party:
Republican
The lane:
John F. Kennedy is running as a business-backed conservative who, as a longtime Capitol insider, is pitching himself as an experienced Republican leader with a record of advnacing GOP priorities at the Capitol.
The basics:
Kennedy is a Macon attorney who, until December, served as Georgia’s Senate president pro tempore. He represented a Macon-based state Senate district from 2015 until stepping down to focus on his campaign late last year.
Why he’s running:
The former state senator, who has aligned himself with Gov. Brian Kemp, said he wants to continue the governor’s agenda and bring experienced leadership to the lieutenant governor’s office.
What’s working:
Kennedy has strong establishment support with deep donor connections based on the years of relationships he built in the Capitol. His connection to Kemp-like Republicans has given him credibility with the more traditional GOP voters.
The challenge:
Kennedy will have to work to introduce himself to voters that aren’t in political circles and may know little about him.
What to watch:
Kennedy received the most votes in the May primary election, but it’s unclear whether voters are going to align with him or his more Trump-aligned opponent.
