The race: Labor Commissioner

Party affiliation: Democrat

The lane:
Nikki Porcher is campaigning on transforming Georgia’s labor system to better meet the needs of workers and businesses. Her platform centers on expanding economic opportunity, strengthening workforce development and making state labor services more accessible and effective.

The basics:
While pledging to modernize Georgia’s Department of Labor, Porcher wants stronger connections between workforce training programs and employment opportunities. She also believes that workers and employers should not be viewed as opposing interests.

Why she’s running:
Porcher says her decision to run stems from personal experience navigating workforce challenges and observing shortcomings in government employment systems. Drawing on her background as a veteran, educator, entrepreneur advocate and someone who has experienced unemployment, she believes the labor department should move beyond simply administering unemployment benefits and instead serve as a gateway to training, employment and economic mobility.

What’s working:
A statewide campaign effort that has taken her to communities across Georgia has helped increase her visibility among voters. As founder of Buy From A Black Woman, Porcher has built a record of supporting entrepreneurs and fostering economic growth. Her outsider status also allows her to position herself as a candidate focused on practical, results-oriented solutions rather than traditional politics.

The challenge:
Porcher remains less well known than some of her competitors and must persuade voters that her advocacy and entrepreneurial experience can translate into effective leadership and policy accomplishments at the state level.

What to watch:
A key question is whether Porcher can leverage support from Black women professionals and benefit from the turnout network associated with Keisha Lance Bottoms to secure enough support in a runoff election.
