The race: Georgia governor
Party affiliation: Republican
The lane:
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr is a pro-business, tough-on-crime Republican that is not a MAGA firebrand and does not possess President Donald Trump’s endorsement.
The basics:
Notably, Carr created Georgia’s Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit and Gang Prosecution Unit, which he frequently highlights on the campaign trail. He also created Georgia’s Gang Prosecution Unit in 2022 and has obtained more than 120 convictions across the state so far, according to the AG’s office.
Why he’s running:
Carr is running because he wants to maintain low taxes, improve business recruitment, emphasize public safety, and conservative governance. His leadership style closely mirrors current Georgia Governor, Brian Kemp, and past Governor Nathan Deal.
What’s working:
Carr possesses statewide executive experience as Attorney General and previously led Georgia’s Department of Economic Development. He is a traditional Republican and is attracting voters who want a conservative appearing stable and electable.
The challenge:
While Carr believes the Republican Primary will head to a runoff, observers wonder if Carr will break through the top-heavy primary field buoyed by Rick Jackson and Lt. Gov. Burt Jones. Plus, it remains unclear if Georgia Republicans want continuity with the Brian Kemp era or a more aggressive, Trump-style candidate.
What to watch:
Can Carr consolidate the Republicans firmly in Governor Kemp’s camp? Moreover, will Kemp’s brand of Republican politics be enough for Carr to power past either Jackson or Jones and secure a runoff spot? Lastly, will undecided Republicans that are tired of the mudslinging by Jackson and Jones push Carr over the line on May 19th?
