The race: Georgia governor

Party affiliation: Democrat

The lane:
Michael Thurmond is a center-left Democrat that is a problem solver and a coalition-builder.

The basics:
Thurmond grew up in Athens and graduated from Paine College. He was the first African-American elected to the Georgia House of Representatives from Clarke County since Reconstruction. Thurmond was a former commissioner with the Georgia Department of Labor, former DeKalb County CEO, interim superintendent of DeKalb County Public Schools, and led Georgia’s Department of Child and Human Services.

Why he’s running:
Thurmond believes he possesses the experience needed to lower costs, expand healthcare access, improve education, and reduce political division. He touts his record and believes it’s about ‘performance, not promises.’

What’s working:
His unifying tone. Thurmond’s message is connecting with Black voters, church communities, and centrist Democrats. Plus, Thurmond’s emphasis on labor issues, public education, civil rights, and economic mobility is making inroads.

The challenge:
Can Thurmond consolidate enough support to outpace Jason Esteves and Geoff Duncan in order to advance to June’s runoff election? Also, some observers wonder aloud whether voters are looking for a younger, next-generation candidate to lead the party.

What to watch:
In a media-driven race, will Thurmond’s message of competence, unity, and governing experience generate excitement among primary voters?  Also, can he attract moderates, independents, and rural voters in a general election
